Italian military patrols to stop "death boats"

October 24, 2013

Italy has decided to step up military patrols in the southern Mediterranean in order to prevent the recurrence of incidents of sinking vessels which victims were hundreds of African migrants this month.
Prime Minister Enrico Letta said that aerial and maritime measures will be applied to the south of Sicily, a region crossed by tens of thousands of migrants from Africa to the island by overcrowded boat .

The Italian Navy said at least 34 people died by a drowning last Friday when the boat sank south of Sicily; the actual number may reach 200 people since the fate of many people remains unknown.

This came after almost a week when 350 migrants drowned in Eritrea and Somalia facing the Italian island Lampedusa in the southern Mediterranean.
