Protests in Romania against shale gas

October 24, 2013

Thousands of Romanians protested on Saturday against plans by U.S. energy group Chevron to explore for shale gas. The protesters demanded their government to withdraw the privileges of the American group stressing the need to protect agricultural land.

The protestors, some of whom came from the capital Bucharest on freight wagons, expressed concerns on the results of operations of shale gas and the risks that could threaten the health of their children, in addition to environmental risks due to concerns around hydraulic fracturing or cracking, the process of injecting water and chemicals at high pressure into underground rock formations to push out gas.

It is expected that drilling operations will begin next spring after the U.S. energy group Chevron ensured that it has taken strict security measuresand promised to provide employment.
