October 29, 2013

The European Union will seek talks with the US over the alleged spying on its European allies under a Franco-German initiative; following further exposure of reported surveillance activities said European Council President Herman Van Rompuy.

"We have close relations with the United States and our position is that the partnership must be based on mutual respect and trust," Van Rompuy said at a press conference at the end of the first day of the EU summit in Brussels, marked by recent revelations concerning US spying in Europe.

France and Germany want to seek bilateral contact with the United States to find a compromise by the end of the year" on the activities of the secret services and any loss of trust will be harmful to the secret services cooperation.
